Coming in a very close second, the runner up for the heart of the home goes to – drum roll – the master bedroom. You spend one-third of your life sleeping, which is why you should design a space that does not only reflect your personality but also stylish enough to last for years. From incorporating throw pillows to selecting the best colour scheme and bed frame, here’s how you can create the perfect master bedroom design.

The master bedroom nowadays acts as a sanctuary to escape the craziness that life throws at us and with space in homes on the decline, for some, it acts as their second living. So let’s jam-pack it full of goodness and ensure it is ticking all the boxes for you and your partner.

1. Get the right bed

You do not want to get to the end of your build or renovation and realise you can’t fit that king-size bed that you already ordered. Whether it’s a canopy bed or an open frame bed, it’s imperative to have these types of measurements in front of mind when designing the space and speak with your builder or designer about it.

But what makes a bed truly cosy is, you guessed it, throw pillows! Take a look at how interior designers design a bedroom and you’ll find that almost everyone recommends having a few cushions on the bed to make it seem more inviting. Besides, they don’t cost much! Just go to any home decor stores or second-hand furniture shops and you’ll find a wide range of design.

If you’re not a fan of modern bedroom idea and are leaning towards having a rustic bedroom, fret not, throw pillows work too! Just adjust the colour scheme of your space from plain white walls to wooden shades and voila, you’ve just got yourself a homely design.

2. Plan your power plugs and sockets

Take the time to plan where your electrical points will go, particularly those which will be by your bed. Consider what height is practical for you too.

Personally, we would prefer to have my bedside powerpoints on display and just above the bedside table (and make sure it’s not hidden behind the bed frame) so we can avoid that awkward and uncomfortable search for it hidden behind furniture when all I want to do is go to sleep.

3. Invest in window treatments

This is one of the most important things in a master bedroom from a practical point of view because of course, we all need a good night’s rest but when it comes to the design and feel of the room they add a real sense of calm and style. A good set of curtains can potentially be the focal point of your room as well.

The choice for window coverings or curtains though is endless so we highly recommend speaking with a professional to find out what options there are on the market which will best suit your home and style. Planning for this early is particularly helpful for your builder so the right provisions are put in place and it’s not an afterthought.

4. Carpet or timber flooring?

With most people, it is often a 50/50 split between their preference for carpet or floorboards in the bedroom and both definitely have their benefits. If cosiness if what you’re looking for, opt for carpet in the master bedrooms to give them a sense of cosiness while reducing the sound that timber flooring sometimes has. Sound retention was always important for us when building a duplex.

From a cost perspective, there are so many great nylon options on the market now which resembles wool without the expensive price tag.

5. Install suitable lighting

Lighting is often neglected when it comes to interior design, but little did you know that the right lighting can make a break a space. Instead of opting for downside and place a mere table lamp on your bedside table, put more thoughts into designing a functional and beautiful space. And you’ll likely need more than one source of light. Try combing bedside table lamp, floor lamp and downlight to create a relaxing ambience in the room.

Another important note, make sure your choice of lighting fits the rest of the bedroom aesthetic, that includes your color scheme and bedroom furniture.
